Natural & Composition
Cork is an incredibly versatile natural material, harvested from living cork oak trees. In fact, cork is composed of dead cells that accumulate on the outer surface of the trees from time to time, so the process is somewhat like gathering virgin wool from sheep. Cork oak trees are completely unharmed by the extraction, and they continue producing cork for an average of 150 years. Natural cork products are created from raw cork, also known as virgin cork, but during the manufacturing process the remaining pellets and waste are always recycled, being organized by quality and grain size.
All those cork granulates left of from the transformation processes are then submitted to high temperatures, which allows to give back density and robustness to the recycled product. That's how agglomerated cork is created, a less noble material than natural cork, but very useful and effective to be used in many applications. Given its density and strength, agglomerated cork is often used to create items that demand special strength, like yoga blocks and pavements, for instance, which need to be very stiff because they will suport a person weight and last for many years.
